I recently had the chance to review Maggies Soap Nuts, and their new liquid formula. Soap Nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree (Sapindus mukorrosi), similar to the lychee. A long time ago, local folks in the South East Asia figured out that when the nuts get wet, they release saponin, a natural cleaner, making them great for washing clothes! Maggie's Soap Nuts are the only household cleaner made exclusively from Nature, by Nature.
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when I first got these. They don't look too appealing, and they don't smell that great either (in my opinion.) But I went ahead and tried them. I used them first on a load of My son's clothes. He has a sensitivity to a lot of detergents, so I thought this would be good since it is all natural. The clothes came out clean and fresh! No weird smell!
Next I tried the liquid formula. The liquid is made from the soap nuts, with a few other (natural) ingredients including lavender and tea tree oil. I loved the smell of this. I love anything with a real lavender scent, and this definitely had it. I also love that you only have to use 1 ounce per load of laundry! I used this soap on a load of cloth diapers. I figured that would be the ultimate test! They came out clean and stink free! I was impressed!

i learned that by buying soapnuts we are helping to prevent deforestation because instead of chopping down the trees to sell as lumber, the live trees are profitable to farmers and therefore are not cut down.
